AYSO Opening Day Was About Fun and Futbol!

South Bay AYSO kicked off the 2012 season with fun for the whole family. Coordinator Luisa Dasis helped bring in a number of booths/vendors–from SportZone to The Super Dentists to Italian Ice Cream. Scrimmages were held throughout the day, and two Matrix competitive matches took place on the big field. Commissioner Marco Beltran was assisted by youth players in leading the Pledge of Allegiance. This year, we had to overcome a number of obstacles to make sure Opening Day was possible, including preparation of the fields and access to the new parking lot. We are very grateful to our volunteer coaches, team managers and Board members who helped make the day a success.

“Thanks to all for a great Opening Day!” Mrs. Dasis said. “The players had fun, there was great food and the kids got some free stuff from Dr. Keri’s Dental Office. Thanks to each and every one of you for your dedication, hard work, time. I greatly appreciate all of the volunteers that were sent help to help out!  I look forward to forward to another exciting Opening Day next year!”

Indeed, AYSO thanks Mrs. Dasis in particular, and all of our volunteers for making a difference for our youth.

Volunteers Help Improve Fields at Southwest High

A special thanks goes out to the volunteers who are making a difference in our community by improving the look of Southwest High, which provides the home fields for South Bay AYSO/South Bay Matrix. On Saturday, Aug. 4 Coach Hector Ordonez of U14G and two parents from his team (Coach Mario Posada and Raul Moreno) helped bring in clean topsoil to fill the gopher holes and pits at the big field. Coach Ordonez filled his truck bed with quality topsoil, and put his back into getting it onto the high-need parts of the field (see photos).

In addition, coaches Marco Corral and Luiz Loya of U13G and Coach Jesus Jimenez of U10G AYSO Extra also donated their time to improving the fields. Mr. Corral mowed all of Borja Field, Mr. Loya fertilized and evened out the big field, and Mr. Jimenez connected the new battery for the riding mower (purchased by yours truly). We also watered, cleaned up trash and organized the league’s shed. We got a lot of work done, but there is still much to do. Please join us Saturday, Aug. 11 after 8 a.m. for the next round of improvements.

South Bay AYSO also thanks Mr. Albert Sais, a dedicated parks worker, for donating his time and talent to repairing the sprinklers at the fields. He has been a real life saver–because without working sprinklers our fields would have had no chance to be ready in time for Opening Day on Aug. 25. As it is, we are going to have to work extra hard to get them in shape in time.

Shakey’s Fundraiser Was a Good Time for All

South Bay AYSO and Matrix teams and families participated in the recent Shakey’s fundraiser at the Chula Vista Mall. Special thanks go out to coordinator Luisa Dasis. The players from the U15G team and U11G Gonzalez team came in their jerseys and spirit wear. Many hit a jackpot of yellow game tickets to redeem for prizes. Our younger recreational players from U8 divisions also had a great time. Check out the slide show below.

U14G Captures Kickin’ It Challenge Tourney

The South Bay Matrix U14G team coached by Hector Ordonez won the KICKIN’ IT CHALLENGE tournament during the weekend of June 23-24. In Silver bracket play, the girls won 4-0 vs. Poway Vaqueros (Domingo), 3-0 vs. Poway Vaqueros (Argueta) and tied 1-1 vs. FC Heat. In the Championship match, the South Bay girls won 1-0 vs. FC Heat. The team gave up only one goal in the tournament, and looks to continue making progress as the squad enters AAA in the Fall 2012 Presidio Season. The Kickin’ It Challenge raises funds and encourages teams to “Unite in the Fight” against Breast Cancer. Congratulations to the U14G team, and for supporting a good cause!

SB is Super in Memorial Cup

South Bay Matrix FC teams shined in the Memorial Super Cup tournament held May 26-27. The Under-14G squad (U15 in 2012-13) is coached by Hector Romo and ended up as Co-Champions in one of the more bizarre finals in recent memory. The final between SB Matrix and Mission Viejo Fusion was called because of darkness. The lights went out at Town Center Community Park soccer complex at 9:30 p.m.—while the teams were still in a penalty shootout! They were tied in kicks from the mark. The teams also tied 2-2 during the thrilling, but abbreviated match. The ‘second half’ was called about 15 minutes early in a vain attempt to hold the shootout in time before the lights were shut off.

Soccer Tournament Specialists, the tournament organizers, declared the teams co-champions as players and parents scrambled to gather their belongings in near total darkness. During the tournament, the South Bay girls scored 13 goals in four matches. Coach Romo’s alignment change resulted in a more wide-open, offense-minded attack. In addition, the team’s signature style of possession soccer yielded stretches of 5,6,7 passes in a row before losing the ball.

In U10G (U11 in 2012-13), the SB Matrix FC team coached by Hector Gonzalez gave the Rebels Lopez team all it could handle in the semis. Matrix and Rebels tied 1-1 in regulation, before Rebels eked out a win in kicks from the penalty mark. The Matrix U10G team got on the board first, stunning Rebels early. Matrix gave up the equalizer in the second half. The South Bay squad demonstrated great footwork in a sometimes overly physical, emotional match. There was very little difference between the teams, skill-wise. That was a great sign for the young South Bay team, which was coming off a dominating performance in a recent beach soccer tournament.

Tournaments such as the Memorial Super Cup provide coaches a window into a team’s strengths and weaknesses–things to work on this summer in preparation for the Presidio League. They can be great fun also. Congratulations to players on both South Bay teams and their coaching staffs.

South Bay Rules the Sun, Surf…and Beach Soccer!

Another South Bay Matrix FC Team Wins a Beach Soccer Championship

The South Bay Matrix FC U10G team coached by Hector Gonzalez won its age group in the Beach Soccer Championships held May 5-6 in Oceanside. South Bay defeated a Surf U10G team 6-2 in the championship match.

South Bay teams have a strong record in beach soccer. In addition to the U10G success, the South Bay U13G team coached by Hector Ordonez made the semi-finals in its age group in the Oceanside tournament, only a week after capturing the Beach Soccer Jam tournament at Fiesta Island.

For the Oceanside tournament, each South Bay team was entered into the highly competitive ‘Sun’ bracket. The South Bay teams trained on the sand in Imperial Beach to prepare for the Oceanside tournament. The girls’ hard work paid off in dominant performances in the Sun brackets’ opening rounds. The U13G team (photo at right) scored an incredible 24 goals in its first three matches, including a convincing 7-2 victory over rival Kodiak. The Ordonez team narrowly lost in the semis, losing 4-3.

The U10G team recorded 16 goals in its first two matches, before smashing Surf in the championship match. For the U10G team (feature photo), it was a second title in three years in this tournament. And defeating a team from Surf, with its cadre of professional coaches and trainers, is another feather in the cap of all-volunteer AYSO, and South Bay soccer specifically. Way to go!

U14G Take on Some of the Best in Nomads Tourney

The U14G South Bay Matrix team represented the club very well in the Nomads Showcase Tournament March 31-April 1. The girls were entered in the tournament’s First Division and came away with two ties and one loss. On Sunday, the Matrix squad played Slammers FC to a scoreless draw. Each team had opportunities to win it in a tightly fought second half. A goal scoring opportunity for South Bay was nullified late in the match that was fairly controversial. Even so, the girls did well.  And here is an interesting fact about that Slammers team: they were 2011 Cal South State Cup Presidents Division – Champions. South Bay Matrix FC gave Slammers FC all they could handle. Hats off to Coach Hector Romo and the girls.
