We are often asked, ‘What is Matrix?’ Well, we could tell you. For example, we could note that: “Matrix is designed to provide a more challenging level of play for those players who possess the appropriate interest, skills and abilities and to enhance each player’s experience and individual growth through the game of soccer while retaining the spirit and organization of AYSO.”
A special thanks goes out to the volunteers who are making a difference in our community by improving the look of Southwest High, which provides the home fields for South Bay AYSO/South Bay Matrix. On Saturday, Aug. 4 Coach Hector Ordonez of U14G and two parents from his team (Coach Mario Posada and Raul Moreno) helped bring in clean topsoil to fill the gopher holes and pits at the big field. Coach Ordonez filled his truck bed with quality topsoil, and put his back into getting it onto the high-need parts of the field (see photos).
In addition, coaches Marco Corral and Luiz Loya of U13G and Coach Jesus Jimenez of U10G AYSO Extra also donated their time to improving the fields. Mr. Corral mowed all of Borja Field, Mr. Loya fertilized and evened out the big field, and Mr. Jimenez connected the new battery for the riding mower (purchased by yours truly). We also watered, cleaned up trash and organized the league’s shed. We got a lot of work done, but there is still much to do. Please join us Saturday, Aug. 11 after 8 a.m. for the next round of improvements.
South Bay AYSO also thanks Mr. Albert Sais, a dedicated parks worker, for donating his time and talent to repairing the sprinklers at the fields. He has been a real life saver–because without working sprinklers our fields would have had no chance to be ready in time for Opening Day on Aug. 25. As it is, we are going to have to work extra hard to get them in shape in time.
The U14G South Bay Matrix team represented the club very well in the Nomads Showcase Tournament March 31-April 1. The girls were entered in the tournament’s First Division and came away with two ties and one loss. On Sunday, the Matrix squad played Slammers FC to a scoreless draw. Each team had opportunities to win it in a tightly fought second half. A goal scoring opportunity for South Bay was nullified late in the match that was fairly controversial. Even so, the girls did well. And here is an interesting fact about that Slammers team: they were 2011 Cal South State Cup Presidents Division – Champions. South Bay Matrix FC gave Slammers FC all they could handle. Hats off to Coach Hector Romo and the girls.
Matrix U19B player and Southwest High Boys’ Varsity member Jess Bojorquez was in the feature photo accompanying an article in the Star-News about his school’s first place finish in South Bay League play. And Nicole Rea and Natalie ‘Jelly’ Morales helped make news at San Ysidro High, where their experiences as freshmen varsity players included the first playoff matches in their school’s history. Jelly was also mentioned in the Star-News for her goal in a league match that clinched San Ysidro’s league title. Nicole and Jelly were on the U14G Matrix last fall, and are looking to carry over their success to the upcoming State Cup. In addition, this week’s El Latino weekly Spanish-language newspaper ran a team photo and extended caption of the U10G Gonzalez team in the youngers’ State Cup.

Congratulations to the many high school varsity players who came out of Coach Marco Beltran’s U19 Boys Matrix team. The boys had a great summer tournament season, and finished a respectable 8-5-1 in the tough Presidio League AAA-South division last fall.
