For people with a growth mindset the brain becomes most active when receiving information about what they could do better next time. In other words, people with a fixed mindset worry the most about how they’re judged, while those with the growth mindset focus the most on learning.
–Eduardo Briceno at TEDxManhattanBeach
How you interpret challenges, setbacks, and criticism is your choice. You can interpret them in a ‘fixed mindset’ as signs that your fixed talents or abilities are lacking. Or you can interpret them in a ‘growth mindset’ as signs that you need to ramp up your strategies and effort, stretch yourself and expand your abilities. It’s up to you.

A dramatic run in the highly competitive State Cup Presidents Division ended as finalists for our AYSO South Bay Matrix Elite girls Under-13 team. The squad lost to Santa Monica United in the championship match on Sunday, March 1 but won over our community. To get to the title match, the South Bay girls had to defeat teams from Rebels, Nado, and Inland Empire Surf just to name a few. We can’t say enough about our South Bay girls. They made AYSO proud, South Bay Region 712, our communities of South San Diego, San Ysidro, and Imperial Beach. Our girls were home grown–made in the South Bay. They showed what a talented team and talented coaches can do when they stay together. Congratulations to all the players, coaches and parents. These are just a few of the photos that helped capture a special moment in our league’s history. #PlayerDevelopment #EverybodyPlays #Believe

Can a volunteer “Dad Coach” from a neighborhood recreational soccer league take a team to the State Cup championship match? And along the way defeat $1,000 per player club teams with every conceivable resource and advantage? Yes. Coach Polo Aviles’ AYSO Matrix South Bay Elite GU13 defeated Inland Empire Surf in OT on Saturday. The South Bay girls are moving on to the State Cup Final. Of course, Coach Polo is no ordinary coach, what with a Master’s Degree, full-time job and dedication as a volunteer for South Bay GU13. His South Bay girls are extraordinary as well. Now, the girls play Santa Monica United in the Presidents Division Championship match on Sunday, March 1. A State title is on the line. It’s a classic matchup, a contrast in style of play and communities. How will this storyline end? #SouthBayAYSO #AllTheWay #Region712 #Underdogs #Believe
