PAVING THE WAY FOR SUCCESS: INTRODUCING THE NEWLY BRANDED SOUTHBAY MATRIX FC

Imperial Beach, Calif. (March 20, 2017) – The South Bay Matrix Bay Football Club reveals new club branding and new color scheme logo.

The previous burgundy color scheme will continue to form part of our AYSO Region 712 programs history through the South Bay establishment which covers Imperial Beach, South San Diego and San Ysidro.

In selecting a new rebranding, we wanted the primary focus to be on South Bay. We really wanted to embrace our community orientation and make it a focal point. We wanted to give our competitive club members and fans something that readily identifies the club as South Bay’s team.

ABOUT SOUTH BAY MATRIX FC:
The South Bay Matrix FC (SBMFC) is South Bay’s competitive soccer program that serves Imperial Beach, South San Diego and San Ysidro. South Bay formed a year after the founding members of the new AYSO Matrix FC in its inaugural 2002 season.

Established in 2003, the South Bay Matrix FC crowned themselves Presidio League Champions in their first season of competitive soccer participation. Since the early beginning South Bay has been a club to be reckoned with and has consistently won competitive/club soccer championships year in and year out from Presidio League to San Diego Developmental Academy (SDDA), to CalSouth State Cup President Finalist, Coast Soccer League (CSL) as well as several high level showcase tournaments. South Bay is also currently participating in the National Premier League (NPL), which is an invitation only prestige travel league.

The club’s new Director of Coaching, Polo Aviles, is the original founder of South Bay Matrix, and actively oversees all operations of the SBMFC. Coach Polo is dedicated to transforming the club into a first-class youth soccer organization that focuses on the player development.

Congratulations to PSC South Bay G2002 in the U15 age group for making National Premier League (NPL) for the 2017 season. Our team is breaking into the NPL soccer scene.

The Southern California NPL serves as the National Premier Leagues (NPL) Division of the SouthCal Premier League. The SouthCal NPL Division is one of 19 leagues across the United States that are part of the NPL, which has been created to provide a national developmental platform with the highest level of competition in given geographic areas, and to elevate and change the competitive youth soccer landscape based upon fundamental principles in US Club Soccer’s 10-year vision. The champions of each NPL (including the SouthCal NPL) are awarded a spot in the US Club NPL National Finals.

This team is a five time league champion that has moved up the ranks. They won back to back Presidio League Championship as well as back to back San Diego Development Academy (SDDA) Championships. Fresh off their Coast Soccer League (CSL) Championship in the Silver Elite South bracket, our highly talented G2002 team has been accepted to participate in the prestige Southern California National Premier League and is seeking a few more talented players for its 2017 Spring Season. The team finished first in 2016 CSL Silver Elite South U15G, Flight 1 U14G of the SDDA in Fall 2015, after winning first in Flight 2 SDDA in Fall 2014. 2015 Season One of Most Successful Ever

It’s that time of year where we reflect on the last 12 months and build and plan for an even better 2016. As a club, it was an amazing 2015 for our Matrix South Bay and Matrix Elite teams. Our first place teams in 2015 include U14G, U12G and U12B. Our U11B team won the 2015 Presidio Cup (in photo). In addition, our U9G team finished in second place, just one point out of first. Think about this for a moment: five of our nine teams in competitive soccer took home a first or second place award. Volunteers make a difference. We’ve proven that over and over. To each of our coaches, we express a debt of gratitude and a shout out, “Well done!”

Our additional 2015 highlights include:

  • U14G Matrix Elite Back to Back SDDA Academy League Champions 2014 & 2015 (Coach Polo and Coach Luis)
  • U13G CalSouth State Cup Finalist 2015 (Coach Polo and Coach Luis)
  • Director of Coaching Guillermo “Memo” Medina earned his U.S. Soccer Federation National “A” license. This is the highest license available in youth soccer.
  • Temporary lighting project designed, developed and installed by volunteers and supported by donations from community leaders and companies.

There is a lot to be proud of, and a lot of exciting soccer ahead of us. Our South Bay AYSO recreational program is as strong as ever, and will continue to feed top talent and coaches into our competitive Matrix soccer side of the house. Our motto for the new year is adapted from the teachings of the great John Wooden: Full Preparation + Full Effort. Here is to unlocking each player’s full potential in 2016, each child’s potential. We look forward to another year of outstanding player and coach growth and development!

Player Age Divisions Switch to Calendar Year

Dear Matrix South Bay Families:

We want to inform you that the U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) has announced new standardized initiatives designed to enhance the development of soccer players in our country by implementing: 1) Player age divisions aligned to calendar birth year rather than fiscal year; and 2) Smaller sided games for divisions U6-U12. The smaller side games initiative will result in smaller roster sizes and fewer players on the field. These two initiatives could have significant implications for players, teams, and clubs.

For additional detailed information on these initiatives and USYS announcements please visit:

The Calendar Year initiative will group players into age divisions according to their calendar birth year January 1st thru December 31st in contrast to the current school year age divisions of birth dates between August 1st to July 31st.

Cal South has formally adopted the Calendar Year initiative. All National level gaming will be conducted using Calendar Year age divisions. State associations and gaming leagues have no choice but to adopt if they wish to compete at the National level. As a result, clubs including Matrix South Bay must plan to implement Calendar Year age divisions for the upcoming 2016-17 season.

A smooth transition will require effective planning and coordination by our club, coaches and managers. We have already begun a team by team review of the impact of the new age divisions.

In regard to the second initiative, Small Sided Games appears to be on the same 2016 timeline as the Calendar Year initiative. At a recent Cal South member meeting, coaching directors voted to adopt/implement all the changes in 2016. In other words, to do it all at once instead of spacing out the initiatives over two years. (Cal South has not yet formally announced adopting small sided games for 2016, but it appears likely.)

Being AYSO families perhaps you are already familiar with smaller sided games. AYSO adopted 7v7 in U10 and 9v9 in U12 several years ago. If you have seen these games in our South Bay AYSO, you know it results in a fast-paced match, with more touches on the ball per player. Our recreational teams are already used to this style of play, maybe that is why our team so easily transition to Presidio.

There is talk that Presidio most likely will grandfather current U11-U12 teams, re number of players on the field. This would be done in order to prevent current U11-U12 teams that are playing 11v11 from moving down to 9v9 next year in 2016.

Shortly, we will be announcing training, starting in December, where we will focus on calendar year age groups to identify potential teams, and fill in our returning teams with age appropriate players. We are confident we will successfully implement the new initiatives, and continue producing high-level soccer.

Sincerely,

Anthony Millican, Coordinator

Memo Medina, Director of Coaching
