South Bay Matrix FC Partners with Pacific Soccer Club

South Bay Matrix FC is proud to announce a collaboration with Pacific Soccer Club (PSC) that will enable South Bay’s highest caliber teams to participate in Coast Soccer League. Pacific Soccer Club (PSC) is the AYSO Competitive Club Soccer program for Orange and Los Angeles counties. PSC has boys and girls teams that compete in Coast Soccer League. Last season, they had 35 teams competing in either Bronze, Silver or Silver Elite brackets.

“This is a huge step forward for our program,” said South Bay Matrix Executive Director Anthony Millican. “This partnership with our sister club in Orange and LA counties opens doors we never thought possible. We have teams that have been successful in San Diego, and now our best teams will have the opportunity to compete with the best in Coast Soccer League.”

Since PSC was founded 16 years ago as part of a third, elite Club-style tier to the AYSO organization, it has grown to involve more than 500 boys and girls in Southern California playing on 35 teams from San Clemente to East Los Angeles. With the addition of South Bay Matrix, PSC will now extend its program to south San Diego.

SB Matrix FC will work closely with Pacific Soccer Club’s directors and coaching staff in implementing PSC’s training plan to enhance the development of players’ skills and technical abilities. The partnership will start with a single team: the newly formed Pacific SC South Bay G2002 team, which will have immediate access to the TAGA GOALKEEPER TRAINING ACADEMY as well as entrance to CSL League Cup, Spring Cup, and California Cup.

Polo Aviles, South Bay Matrix FC coach and Technical Program Director, as well as Asst. Coach Luis Rivera will be joining PSC as coaches for the Girls 2002 squad, which will compete in Coast’s Silver Elite bracket. Coach Aviles will continue serving as Technical Program Director of South Bay Matrix FC.

“We are looking to provide additional options for our teams and coaches,” Coach Aviles said. “Our aim is to provide more opportunities for soccer players, both competitively and recreationally. Our hope is that this relationship in the near future will also include boy’s teams under the PSC banner to compete in Coast Soccer League.”

2016 PSC G2002 SBBruce Bricks, the President of Pacific Soccer Club, said he is pleased to welcome Pacific SC South Bay to the club. “They will add another dimension to our club and provide players the opportunity to develop their skills further. Polo and his staff will also add coaching expertise to our program.”

South Bay AYSO has long fielded quality soccer teams, with coaches who have proven that volunteers can and do “make a difference.” South Bay Matrix was developed as the region’s competitive soccer option for players and coaches looking to grow their game. Coach Aviles’ squad has taken the program to yet another level.

“The core of this 2002 girls team won back-to-back championships in the San Diego Development Academy,” Millican said. “They have done all they can in San Diego. The team is the perfect candidate to pilot our partnership under the Pacific Soccer Club umbrella.”

This new structure will offer three playing options for each division:

  1. CSL – Silver/Silver Elite/Gold & someday Premier for the most competitive teams, which should also increase exposure on a regional and national basis and give players a chance to compete against top clubs. Entrance criteria for this league would be previous SDDA team with a level of success in their respective Flight 1 or 2 bracket.
  2. SDDA – The local premier league, which is the most competitive level in San Diego and gives teams exposure to National Cup. The highest platform for our local competitive teams.
  3. Presidio League – Competitive, which also gives our players a chance to compete in the bracket of their choice, but also gives players just entering the competitive level the chance to see if it is the right fit.
  4. AYSO Extra – A program that offers organized soccer for players who want to play at a more competitive level. Club soccer teams are in place in many parts of the country, but for those who want to play harder and still be a part of AYSO, EXTRA is a perfect starting point before transitioning to Presidio.

Matrix Elite Coach Completes Coerver Coaching Level 2 Course

Congratulations to Matrix Elite Coach Hector Romo for completion of the Coerver Coaching Youth Diploma Level 2 course. The course took place the weekend of May 14-15. Among other topics, Coach Romo learned about developing cognitive thinking in players, fostering individual and small group skills needed for a successful BOX / TRAP team,  The Growth Mindset and pursuit of excellence through study and hard work that all Coerver students (and South Bay players, for that matter) should have. Coach Romo (photo, at right, with AYSO Pacific Soccer Club Director of Coaching Grant Heywood) is South Bay Matrix Director of Coaching, Girls Program. He is also head coach of South Bay’s Matrix  Elite 2003 girls team. The team will compete this fall in the San Diego Development Academy.

Coerver Coaching is a football skills teaching method suited for all ages but especially for players aged 5-16 years old of all abilities and their parents, coaches and teachers. It is a method that focuses on individual skills development and small group play.

Community Pride Flying High at Our Fields

FullSizeRenderNew flags adorn the entrance to our field at Southwest Middle School, including the school’s ‘Buccaneer’ logo. AYSO has provided the school a flag, which is flying alongside the flags of AYSO Region 712 and South Bay Matrix. A special thanks goes out to volunteers Ernie Ruiz and Santiago Villanueva for installing the flag poles and making repairs to help the fields as well. We are sure our parents and players will enjoy seeing the flags fly high!

2015 Season One of Most Successful Ever

It’s that time of year where we reflect on the last 12 months and build and plan for an even better 2016. As a club, it was an amazing 2015 for our Matrix South Bay and Matrix Elite teams. Our first place teams in 2015 include U14G, U12G and U12B. Our U11B team won the 2015 Presidio Cup (in photo). In addition, our U9G team finished in second place, just one point out of first. Think about this for a moment: five of our nine teams in competitive soccer took home a first or second place award. Volunteers make a difference. We’ve proven that over and over. To each of our coaches, we express a debt of gratitude and a shout out, “Well done!”

Our additional 2015 highlights include:

  • U14G Matrix Elite Back to Back SDDA Academy League Champions 2014 & 2015 (Coach Polo and Coach Luis)
  • U13G CalSouth State Cup Finalist 2015 (Coach Polo and Coach Luis)
  • Director of Coaching Guillermo “Memo” Medina earned his U.S. Soccer Federation National “A” license. This is the highest license available in youth soccer.
  • Temporary lighting project designed, developed and installed by volunteers and supported by donations from community leaders and companies.

There is a lot to be proud of, and a lot of exciting soccer ahead of us. Our South Bay AYSO recreational program is as strong as ever, and will continue to feed top talent and coaches into our competitive Matrix soccer side of the house. Our motto for the new year is adapted from the teachings of the great John Wooden: Full Preparation + Full Effort. Here is to unlocking each player’s full potential in 2016, each child’s potential. We look forward to another year of outstanding player and coach growth and development!
